Microsoft Search and M365 Copilot are redefining how people find information, reason, and get work done using AI. We are looking for a Software Engineer II to help build and evolve AI‑powered Search and Copilot experiences used by millions of customers every day across Windows and Microsoft 365.
In this role, you will contribute to end‑to‑end product engineering across web UI and backend services/APIs, shipping reliable, high‑performance features used at scale. You are expected to operate with increasing autonomy, proactively self‑learn, and own technical problems within a feature area end‑to‑end.
This role is ideal for engineers who see AI as a force multiplier in their daily development workflow and enjoy solving evolving problems at the intersection of user experience quality and data‑driven iteration.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to user acquisition and engagement outcomes for Microsoft Search and M365 Copilot experiences by implementing features and improvements identified by the team.
- Build and ship features across the stack by implementing user experiences (web UI) and supporting backend services/APIs, with guidance, focusing on correctness, maintainability, and performance.
- Participate in A/B experiments by helping implement experiment variants, validating instrumentation, and learning how results are analyzed to understand impact on engagement and experience quality.
- Use telemetry and live‑site insights to help identify bugs and regressions; assist in triaging issues and implementing fixes within your area, escalating when appropriate.
- Implement components and features within a defined scope; contribute to design discussions, understand dependencies, and break down work into clear, well‑scoped tasks with support.
- Write clean, tested, and documented code; participate in code reviews as an author and reviewer, learning best practices from feedback.
- Learn and adopt AI‑assisted development practices responsibly, using AI tools to prototype, reason about code, and generate tests—paired with careful review and validation.
- Collaborate with partners across disciplines (PM, Design, Privacy/Legal as needed) to deliver cohesive experiences and follow established patterns and platforms.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience or coursework related to web services, APIs, or backend systems.
- Basic understanding of data structures, algorithms, system design fundamentals, and performance considerations.
- Exposure to improving code quality, test coverage, or debugging issues in development or production environments.
- Interest in AI‑assisted development workflows and learning how to use AI tools effectively with a solid quality mindset.
- Passion for continuous learning and growing as a software engineer through feedback and hands‑on experience.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
