Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack)
Microsoft
Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
The SIX team (Server, Intelligence, and eXperiences) operates at a critical intersection where Windows Server meets its customers. We design and build products and features that shape how people manage and interact with server instances, explore the evolving role of Server in AI, and support both our internal partners and a diverse global customer base. Our work spans a broad and modern technology stack, including .NET, C#, C++, TypeScript, React, and more, offering opportunities to grow across multiple domains.
We are looking for engineers who are curious, collaborative, and passionate about re‑imagining how people experience and manage Windows Server. Whether you bring deep expertise in a specific area or are excited to grow across new technologies, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully while learning from a supportive and inclusive team.
At SIX, we value diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. We believe the best ideas come from teams where everyone feels empowered to share their voice, learn continuously, and do their best work. You’ll be encouraged to experiment, innovate, and help shape technology that will matter for years to come.
To learn more about our work and the impact we’re making, we invite you to follow us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/@servermgmt), explore the Windows Server blog (http://aka.ms/wacteamblog), and check out the latest updates on the Windows blog.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
AI‑Native Development & Coding Excellence:
- Independently applies AI tools and practices across the software development lifecycle (SDLC) in a disciplined and accountable manner, taking ownership of AI‑generated requirements, designs, code, and other assets while helping teammates do the same.
- Uses engineering health metrics and frameworks (e.g., Accelerate, SPACE, ESSP) to continuously improve processes, particularly those involving AI.
- Leads by example in producing secure, extensible, maintainable, and well‑tested code, applies modern coding patterns (including GenAI‑assisted approaches), and drives timely, high‑quality code reviews that consider diagnosability, reliability, testability, performance, and compliance.
Design, Architecture & Test Strategy:
- Owns and drives solution design and architecture for complex products or subsystems, evaluating multiple design options and clearly articulating trade‑offs.
- Creates clear, comprehensive test strategies that prevent regressions, incorporate security testing, and improve test reliability, speed, and coverage, leveraging AI tools for test automation where appropriate.
- Identifies dependencies across teams and systems, collaborates to resolve ownership and integration challenges, and ensures designs meet requirements for performance, scalability, resiliency, cost, disaster recovery, security, privacy, and compliance.
Engineering Excellence, Security & Compliance:
- Applies best practices and secure design principles to build and scale products that meet customer, performance, and security commitments.
- Drives automation across build, deployment, and production workflows, targeting zero‑touch deployment where possible.
- Establishes strong security invariants and “security as code” practices, including threat modeling, monitoring, deployment gates, and incident response readiness, while maintaining awareness of regulatory and compliance requirements and ensuring visible evidence of adherence.
Implementation, Reliability & Customer Focus:
- Leverages subject‑matter expertise to plan and execute projects end‑to‑end, breaking work into actionable roadmaps, driving experimentation through feature flags and metrics, and ensuring safe, efficient deployments.
- Builds robust observability through logging, telemetry, dashboards, and alerts, acts as a DRI for live‑site health, and leads incident response and postmortems to reduce recurrence.
- Collaborates closely with product, security, and customer‑facing stakeholders to understand user requirements, incorporate feedback loops, and continuously improve product quality, reliability, and customer value.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience building web applications using the Angular framework, including developing reusable, Angular-based UI controls; strong experience with HTML and JavaScript development; proficiency in C#, C++, .NET, or Java; solid understanding of data structures and algorithms; deep functional knowledge or hands-on design experience with web services such as REST and SOAP; demonstrated ability to drive technical investigations and prototyping in a fast-paced environment; and strong verbal and written communication skills.
