Overview

Microsoft Digital (MSD) builds and manages the critical products and services that Microsoft runs on. We boldly pursue big ideas that power transformational advances at Microsoft and for our customers, while helping Microsoft teams work smarter, faster, and more securely every day. Microsoft Digital employees have deep technical and business expertise, customer insights, and a clear point of view that comes from first-hand, large-scale experience with Microsoft and industry solutions. We are engineers, technology leaders and experts, digital transformation change agents, and customer advocates.

We have exciting opportunities for you to innovate, influence, transform, inspire, and grow within our organization and we encourage you to apply to learn more!

This team doesn't just move data - it builds the intelligence layer that powers Microsoft's global infrastructure. We are looking for a data focused Software Engineer who treats large‑scale data platforms as mission‑critical systems, not reporting pipelines. You will design and operate multi‑terabyte, real‑time data pipelines and analytics systems that ingest telemetry from devices and services across the enterprise, transforming raw signals into trusted, high‑quality data products used for automation, decision‑making, and AI‑driven workflows.

What makes this team different? Everything we build is designed for scale, speed, and autonomy. You’ll work on modern data mesh architectures using cutting‑edge platforms like Microsoft Fabric to democratize analytics while enforcing strong data quality, governance, and observability standards. Your work will enable real‑time telemetry and insight that power agentic automation—helping systems detect configuration drift, security risks, and operational anomalies and respond without human intervention. This is data engineering where real‑time guarantees and correctness matter as much as throughput.

You will join a highly experienced, fun and dynamic team responsible for the data foundations behind Microsoft’s infrastructure services—systems that enable every employee, contractor, and guest to work productively and securely every day. The problems are complex, the scale is unmatched, and the expectations are high: solve hard data challenges, meet business demands using Big Data, and continuously raise the bar for reliability, engineering excellence and observability across all infrastructure IT services. If you want your engineering work to directly shape how Microsoft operates at global scale, this is the team pushing that frontier forward.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Engineer platform reliability at scale: You will own the reliability, availability, and correctness of largescale, realtime data platforms powering Microsoft’s infrastructure. You define and drive SLOs, error budgets, and operational health for multiterabyte pipelines and analytics systems—owning outcomes, not just services.
  • Design, build, and operate through a real SDLC: You will take ambiguous, highimpact business and infrastructure requirements and translate them into durable, wellarchitected data systems. This includes authoring designs, building productiongrade pipelines, validating data quality guarantees, and shipping safely through disciplined CI/CD and release practices.
  • Drive architectural maturity and engineering excellence: You will raise the bar across the data platform by defining patterns for realtime ingestion, data modeling, observability, and governance. You influence architectural direction, uphold engineering standards, and push the platform toward greater autonomy, scalability, and resilience.
  • Apply AI and automation for continuous improvement: You will leverage AIassisted engineering and intelligent automation to reduce operational toil, improve data quality, accelerate diagnostics, and enable agentic workflows. The goal isn’t automation for its own sake—it’s faster learning loops, safer systems, and selfhealing infrastructure.
  • Deliver trusted AI-Ready data that drives business and operational outcomes: You will solve complex data quality and integration challenges to ensure analytics and automation operate on trusted signals. Your work directly influences security posture, configuration compliance, operational efficiency, and executive decisionmaking across Microsoft.
  • Instrument the enterprise for deep observabiity: You will design and evolve telemetry ingestion and analytics that observe devices, services, and infrastructure globally—surfacing configuration risks, security signals, and operational anomalies across all IT services.
  • Modernize the data and engineering toolchain: You will continuously evolve the platform ecosystem—introducing modern data technologies, improving developer experience, and reducing friction across build, deploy, and operate workflows to improve reliability and mean time to recovery.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

What You Bring:

  • 4+ years operating and improving large-scale online services —you’ve lived through incidents, scaling challenges, and the hard lessons that come with production ownership
  • 2+ years of Data Engineering platform development —you know how to model data, develop real-time and batch pipelines and build resilient, scalable analytical services.
  • 2+ years of hands-on coding in JavaScript, Python, PiSpark, SQL/kQL, PowerShell, or C#—you write real code, not just workflow drag-and-drop
  • SDLC fluency: You’ve delivered features from ambiguous requirements through to production, and you know how to manage that process without drowning in ceremony
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills: You work effectively across teams, translate technical complexity for non-technical stakeholders, and don’t disappear into a silo
  • Comfort with ambiguity and pace: You operate independently in fast-moving environments and don’t need someone to tell you what to do next

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and knowledge of IT infrastructure and networking.
  • Familiarity with Data/AI/ML tools such as Synapse/Fabric/Kusto/Data factory/EventHub/StreamAnalytics
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, or infrastructure-as-code
