Within Copilot Shared Services, we apply a data-driven approach to innovation, led by experimentation, and leveraging new foundational LLMs, advanced ML techniques, rich algorithms, and AI technologies. The skills of Data Science will help us to accelerate developmental advancements and improve quality of our customer experiences. We invest in agentic solutions and are working to advance methods of evaluation and automated customer solutions. We are looking for a Data Scientist 2 to join our team to help shape the future of how Office users interact with Copilot and AI. You will leverage your understanding of data science and business to examine projects and consider factors that can influence final outcomes within technical areas.

In this role as a Data Scientist II, you’ll work closely with engineers, program managers, data scientists and applied scientists to improve our approach to experimentation, and advance personalized experiences, the use of foundational models, advancement of evaluation techniques, and improve overall efficiency.

Responsibilities will include leading with a data first mindset, advancing experimentation, evaluations and datasets, evolution of advanced prompt engineering, selection and fine-tuning of models, develop concepts for more efficient and accurate solutions, and research and assess different architectures and approaches from across the M365 ecosystem. You will connect with leaders and subject matter experts across the company and play a key role in building reliable, measurable systems that bridge cutting-edge AI with their expression across M365 Copilot user experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Define, lead, and implement advanced, repeatable data-driven pipelines and techniques with an emphasis on evaluation for the next generation of model generated suggested user actions.
  • Conduct research projects and workstreams that directly benefit our customers, drive positive usage, and improve Microsoft’s core productivity products.
  • Evolve our approach of our prompt engineering, model selection, design and manage evaluation datasets, develop concepts for more efficient and accurate solutions, and researching and assessing different architectures and approaches from across the M365 ecosystem.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with people in a range of roles, including researchers, engineers, product managers, designers, and product leaders and other key product stakeholders.
  • Generate AI solutions that can be shipped to customers to improve their experience and used internally to generate data insights to shape the features and products we ship to customers.
  • Teach, guide, and tutor colleagues without research backgrounds in state-of-the-art techniques and research best practices.
  • Many of the things you will try should lead to unexpected outcomes. You must be comfortable learning from experience, developing new hypotheses, and iterating.
  • Sharing project outcomes and insights with others via a range of means, including publication, to enable others to build on your work and to contribute to the understanding of our products as cutting-edge and science driven.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field
    • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) or consulting experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.


Data Science IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
