Are you a software engineer who seeks out complex technical challenges, enjoys collaborating with others, and wants to help accelerate the adoption of Azure? On the Azure Deployments team, we build open-source tools such as Bicep, a large-scale deployment automation platform and set of core features that enable customers to confidently deploy and run their cloud infrastructure.
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is customer focused to help us chart a course for the next generation of infrastructure automation tooling. This role offers opportunities for growth and immediate business impact. We are looking for candidates who can think broadly, collaborate well, pick up and contribute to a broad range of technologies, and generally want to have fun enabling enterprise customers to leverage technology to be their most efficient and effective in their business.
As a member of the Azure Deployments team, you will develop new features for the services that power Bicep, Azure Resource Manager Templates, Azure Verified Modules, and other products and tooling used by customers to author Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Bicep and Terraform. This opportunity will allow you to partner with Community team members to ensure the Bicep community of open-source contributors and users is healthy and supported. You will also help develop and run experiments to chart a course for the next generation of infrastructure automation tooling.

Responsibilities
- Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario.
- Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
- Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
- Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiating actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
- Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
- Mentors other engineers by providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, sharing best practices, and supporting skill development to improve team capability and engineering quality.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: In this position you will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating scalable, highly available cloud services or distributed systems on platforms such as Azure, AWS, GCP, or comparable cloud environments, with production ownership and CI/CD pipeline integration
- 2+ years of experience designing, developing, or maintaining secure software systems, with applied knowledge of authentication, data protection, access control, and secure coding practices
- Exposure to live site engineering practices, telemetry pipelines, and monitoring systems
- Experience with Cloud providers and infrastructure-as-code tooling

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
