MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a federally-funded research and development center focused on the application of advanced technologies to problems of national security. The center focused on long-term technology development as well as rapid system prototyping and demonstration. Founded in 1951, the company’s initial goal was to develop the nation’s air defense system using advanced electronics, its first breakthrough technology being the semi-automatic ground environment air defense system. In present day, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has expanded its development scope to include programs in space surveillance, missile defense, surface surveillance, air traffic control, object identification, communications, homeland protection, high-performance computing, reconnaissance, and more.
