Duties
The Chief Engineer Human Landing System Program Office:
- Executes Engineering Technical Authority, ensuring appropriate technical rigor. Establishes and assumes responsibility for the engineering design processes, specifications, rules, and best practices necessary to fulfill programmatic requirements.
- Interfaces with the Program Manager, other chief engineers, vehicle-level discipline lead engineers, partner managers, and the HLS Program Chief Safety Officer.
- Continually engages and provides leadership to the engineering workforce at all NASA Centers working on HLS matters of engineering and program success.
- Interfaces directly with program management to accomplish program objectives, support the design and development activity, and assure safety and operational objectives are achieved.
- Establishes requirements, evaluates maturity of design solutions, establishes certification of flight hardware, assesses systems for safety of flight, and certifies flight readiness.
- Plans, directs, and coordinates engineering and integration activities in support of the Engineering Directorate's technical activities and represents the Engineering Directorate at critical milestone reviews, boards, and panels.
- Represents the Center to the cognizant offices of NASA Headquarters and the scientific and industrial communities within the U.S., and participates in national and international symposia and seminars related to space system development and operations.

Qualifications
Candidate must possess a detailed technical understanding of the design, development, certification, and operation of space flight vehicles and systems.
Candidates must have significant experience in technical management, design, and development of flight systems, program and project management activities for complex systems, and operation of intricate flight systems.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information
Current NASA employees will receive a temporary promotion and serve for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the temporary promotion, the selectee will either return to an appropriate position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held OR will be converted permanently without further competition.
This temporary promotion may be terminated at any time.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
