Title:
Post Doctoral Research Associate – Champagne Group

Department:
Chemistry and Environmental Science

Reports To:
Assistant Professor

Position Type:
Staff

Position Summary:
We are looking for a prospective postdoctoral researcher who will develop novel photoactivated tools and use computational approaches to answer questions about chemical reactivity and organic reaction mechanisms, in the field of polysulfide chemistry. The project will require the synthesis, photophysical characterization, and live cell imaging of novel photoactivated donors of reactive sulfur species, important intermediates in biosynthetic pathways. In parallel, the researcher will use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to explore the reaction pathways of these intermediates under biological conditions, and relate their findings to known reactions and systems.

Essential Functions:
-The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of the PI.
-They will be asked to perform organic synthesis, purification, characterization of novel photoactive molecules, perform photophysical characterization, and study the behavior of the molecules in live cells.
-They will also prepare and submit computations using state-of-the-art software packages such as Gaussian 16 and ORCA.
-The postdoctoral researcher will analyze data and solve chemical or computational issues, write manuscripts, reports or tutorials depending on their results, and present their findings in meetings local and regional.
-They will be asked to supervise mentees that include junior graduate students, undergraduate students, or high school students, and overall work in a highly collaborative environment.

Additional Functions:
-The postdoctoral researcher will also be asked to perform managerial duties such as safety training and inventory/ordering management.
-They will also generate new material for the Visualize Organic Chemistry platform.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
-Candidates must have a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, along with some experience working with organosulfur compounds and/or photoactive molecules.
-The successful candidate will be self-motivated, well-organized and resourceful.
-At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with computational studies of organic mechanisms using DFT is preferred.
-Experience with live cell experiments is preferable but not required.
