Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Extension Agronomy Student Assistant for the Union-Baker-Wallowa County Extension Agronomist with Oregon State University (OSU).

This position is designed to provide assistance to the Union-Baker-Wallowa County Extension Agronomist (OSU Dept. of Crop and Soil Science county-based faculty member) to conduct fi eld-based research projects and to design/deliver extension outreach programs focused on irrigated cropping systems and integrated pest management (IPM) in NE Oregon.

The position provides an opportunity to acquire agronomic fi eld research and extension outreach experience needed to fulfill undergraduate internship requirements.
Position Duties
Performs routine to complex technical tasks (e.g. trial establishment and maintenance, data collection/entry) in support of research projects involving irrigated cropping systems and integrated pest management (IPM).
The position will also assist in the development and delivery of extension outreach programs (e.g. indoor workshops, field tours, farm visits, etc.) and, when applicable, research proposals, proposals, and/or professional presentations.
Current research and extension activities include: NIR seed moisture technology development, disease/insect pest monitoring in irrigated cropping systems; weed management in cool season grasses grown for seed (Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue); AI-driven precision spraying technology and various other projects that may involve travel throughout Union, Baker, and Wallowa counties.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
The position requires driving a university or personal vehicle, so incumbent must pass a motor vehicle history check and maintain a valid driver’s license.
The incumbent also should meet the following requirements: on occasion, work independently of the supervisor (without immediate supervision)

  • Ability to interact with the public in a professional, positive, and friendly manner
  • Work under climate-controlled indoor conditions and outdoors under ambient weather & field conditions that occur during the spring, summer, and fall
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Agronomy and/or seek to fulfill internship requirements for related discipline areas. Ability to work a flexible schedule if outdoor weather conditions prevent completing tasks during the normal M-F work week.
High school students are eligible to apply but must be at least 18 years of age in order to drive a university vehicle.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The incumbent will be needed 20-40 hours/week during late spring and summer months but will also have opportunity to work occasionally during the fall, winter, and/or spring term of the current academic year depending upon program needs.
