Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and a maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks) student technical assistant for the Animal & Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

The seasonal position will require a student to perform routine to complex technical tasks in support of research and administrative work, which includes rangeland data collection, and simple analysis. Fieldwork is based out of the OSU Extension Service Office in Malheur County.

Responsibilities include collecting rangeland vegetation associated with the Oregon State University Fine Fuels Management project on public lands managed by the Vale District BLM, administrative Extension Service tasks, multi-media and rangeland-based beef projects related to improving the sagebrush steppe of southeastern Oregon, and assisting in cattle grazing behavior applied research.

Less than 20 hrs/week during the school year and up to 40 hrs/week during the summer.
Position Duties
  • Collecting vegetative data for rangeland-based beef cattle experiments
  • Video production and photography in the sagebrush steppe of Malheur County
  • Recording rangeland vegetation data in Excel and creating tables and figures
  • Work with large herbivore grazing behavior datasets
  • Observing cattle grazing behavior
  • Support Extension Service programming and administrative tasks at extension programs
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
Must be willing to work in rough, rugged, and remote rangeland conditions with a rangeland crew that consists of university students, as of fall 2025, graduate students, university faculty, and volunteers. Due to the nature of the field work, the individual must be able to elevate 30 pounds overhead and drive a public vehicle. Additionally, it is imperative to have incredible skills to communicate with and support a broader team.

  • Experience as a team member working with diverse team members
  • Experience in a club or organization towards natural resource conservation
  • Experience in high desert sagebrush rangelands
  • Experience with technology to produce multimedia videos
