Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time seasonal student employment position for the Human and Ecosystem Resilience and Sustainability Lab (HERS).
This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 3 months from the appointment begin date. The technical assistant will assist Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with fisheries enhancement via invasive Tui chub removal at various lakes on the Deschutes National Forest. Project work will be in the field and will involve use of motor boats to deploy/collect fyke nets, harvest Tui chub, and transport Tui chub to disposal areas. The technician will have many opportunities to work with ODFW on other fisheries-related projects throughout the summer.
*Anticipated Hourly Rate $18 per hour
Position Duties
Position Duties: 90% field work
The project will be an average of 40 hours per week from June 1, 2017 – September 2017. The exact dates of the project are flexible depending on the selected applicant’s schedule.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
1. Driving a boat to and from trap net sites.
2. Setting large fyke or trap nets, emptying fyke nets of fish and lifting barrels
of fish onto truck bed (all trout and salmon will be released unharmed). Loads of
chub will vary from 400-2,000 pounds a day and some days may require multiple
trips to a dump site.
3. Travel to Big Lava, Paulina and East Lake on alternating days to work trap nets.
4. Collection of lengths and weights from chub and trout to determine condition factors of fish.
5. Marking a sample population of chub with floy tags and release into the lake. Tagged fish captured in trap nets will be enumerated for a population estimate.
10% Data management and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
These positions will require operation of motorized boats equipped with motors larger than 10 hp. As such, the Oregon Marine Board requires all operators to complete online boater safety training and possess a boater education card. This training can be completed at any time prior to the onset of field activities.
1. General working knowledge of concepts in watershed and/or fisheries management and enhancement;
2. Ability to work independently in a variety of outdoor conditions, including rugged terrain and inclement weather;
3. Ability to lift heavy loads
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills;
5. Computer proficiency, especially word processing, spreadsheets, data management, and internet communication functions;
6. Willingness to travel periodically (safe, competent driver, insured);
7. Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying; and
8. Regular and reliable attendance.
