Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (8-20 hours per week) Research Assistant positions in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

The employees will assist in a combination of data analyses, engineering developments, and field work to support the Nash Research Lab in Corvallis, OR (OSU Campus). The research team led by Dr Jonathan Nash studies ocean mixing dynamics in a variety of environments ranging from the open ocean to glacier faces. The success of this project depends on the development and deployment of several autonomous craft (surface and underwater) carrying oceanographic instrumentation, and the analyses of data collected by these instruments.

These students will assist with the development of our autonomous craft and sensor systems. The students will function as part of a small existing team of personnel that are highly dedicated to the success of this project.
Position Duties
70% Data analyses and Engineering Support:
  • Analyses physical ocean and ice data using Matlab or Python; helps design, manufacture, and test electronic and mechanical sensors and components. This may include board and hardware assembly, testing of components for use at sea (above and below water), and diagnosing mechanical and/or electrical issues

20% Meetings and Documentation
  • The student will be expected to participate in and contribute to weekly meetings
  • The successful applicant will also be expected to maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation on the electronics and robotics systems

10% – Field work:
  • May participate in short local field tests (e.g. one-day Oregon Coast trips) and/or research cruises up to 3 weeks long, if working during the summer
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in mechanical or electrical or robotic systems design and operation. Works well both independently and as part of a team

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in electronics system design and development
  • Experience with the BlueROV2 and QGroundControl

  • Familiarity with Python and/or Matlab
