Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and a maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks) Student Technical Assistant for the Department of Environmental & molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University (OSU).

Student will perform research in toxicology on metabolism of natural (fungal or plant in origin) contaminants of importance to agriculture. Contamination of animal feed products with mycotoxins are of particular focus. This will include development of skills in analytical chemistry and use of instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS. Routine laboratory duties such as dishes and proper waste disposal will be part of the position as well. Seeking a student who will be present for summer and fall terms (10-24 hours per week).
Position Duties
50%: Carry out toxicology assays including extraction of original plant/feed and secondary products for mycotoxins by HPLC or LC-MS/MS
20%: Processing/summary of data using instrument specific software, Microsoft and/or statistical programs
20%: Laboratory maintenance (e.g. washing dishes, stocking consumables, chemical inventory, prepping solutions and proper waste disposal) and related work
10%: Entry of literature into databases and electronic organization of files associated with lab projects
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
Must be able to work well with others as part of an integrated team and have attention to detail. Responsible and well organized with good time management and communication skills.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Experience or classes in chemistry, biology, agricultural sciences, toxicology and related fields is preferred, but not required. In addition, any skills handling laboratory studies and their workflow is preferred.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Most work is done in a typical laboratory setting. Students will work around hazardous chemicals, dust from ground plant samples, possible dirt and mold when handling samples. Appropriate safety gear and training will be provided. Flexible hours as needed to complete research projects with consideration for student’s class schedule (10-24 hours/week).
