Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill a part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and a maximum of 40 hours per week during academic breaks depending on your enrolled credits) Student Technical Assistant for the Department of Crop and Soil Science at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position performs routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research, clinical or administrative/institutional work. Some positions may include laboratory research, green house operations, field plotting, data collection, data analysis, or the care and maintenance of equipment and spaces. Positions may typically be found in Academic, Research, or Extension units.
The student will assist in developing laboratory methods for analyzing cereal grains as well as conducting research on physical properties, chemical composition, and functionality of cereal grains. The student may also help with set-up and cleanup of laboratories for the undergraduate food chemistry class (FST425).

Position Duties
50% Laboratory analysis
Measuring, for example, kernel hardness, flour milling performance, flour absorption capacities, dough properties, starch and fiber functionality, and other traits using specialized cereal chemistry methods and equipment, and use of electrophoresis, HPLC, FTIR, or other instrumentation).

15% Sample preparation
  • Making reagents.

Collecting and preparing grain for milling and further analysis.
  • Extracting samples.
  • 25% Cleanup

Maintaining clean workspaces.
  • Cleaning bakery lab on a regular basis (sweeping and washing floors, removing trash, cleaning and washing equipment and smallwares, etc)
10% Other duties
  • Helping with field trials.
  • Lab organization.
  • Sample preservation and labeling.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of food chemistry or other chemistry.
  • Major or minor in food science, chemistry, or microbiology.
  • Able to commit to work a minimum of 4 hrs/shift and at least 2 shifts/week.
  • Must be able to demonstrate meticulous, precise, and consistent lab work.
  • Pays close attention to detail.
  • Must be able to stay focused and avoid distractions during work hours, including limiting phone or tablet use while performing tasks.
  • Able to work both independently and in teams.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience in applying laboratory techniques specific to cereal grains and their physical, chemical, and functional properties and specific to flour, dough, batters, and finished products (e.g. breads).

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Work is performed in a typical laboratory and outdoors in various locations, on or off main campus, or at partner institutions.
  • Will have exposure to wheat, wheat flour, wheat-flour dust, wheat-based doughs and batters and wheat-based food products, and other cereals.
  • May have exposure to noxious odors, chemicals, loud noises, wet and slippery floors, machinery, and dust.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
  • May maneuver up to 50 lbs. and may be required to stoop, bend and kneel on hard floors as necessary.
  • Flexible hours as needed to complete experiments/projects. Some lab-work and fieldwork may occur early in the morning or in the evenings.
  • May require work with hazardous material or equipment such as toxic chemicals, etc.
