Job Summary | This is an Internal Employment Opportunity. The Hatfield Marine Science Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Faculty Research Assistant: Plankton Lab position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director. This position is located in Newport, Oregon. The Faculty Research Assistant works with Principal Investigators (PIs) on research projects associated with plankton imaging, taxonomic identification, data collection and analysis. Primary responsibilities include deployment of underwater imaging equipment in freshwater ponds, and in the coastal ocean. Additional tasks include processing plankton samples, identifying and measuring larval fishes and their prey, potentially dissecting fish for their otoliths, and database management. |

What You Will Need |
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. |
What We Would Like You to Have |

Working Conditions / Work Schedule | Majority of daily work will be in the laboratory processing plankton samples, most of which are preserved in 70% ethanol. Regular fieldwork sampling freshwater ponds from a kayak. Occasional work on research vessels collecting plankton data at sea. Such trips could be up to 21 days in duration at which times the employee might work more than 8 hours per day, including day and night hours. |
