Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Sensing Platform Developer for the Crop and Soil Science department at Oregon State University (OSU).

We’re looking for a motivated student to help design, build, and test custom sensor systems for various agricultural use. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience in PCB design, embedded systems, sensor integration, and real-world product development.

Position Duties
  • Design and prototype electronic circuits & PCB boards to achieve specific sensing functions
  • Assemble various sensors with microcontrollers and embedded systems
  • Develop software and firmware for data acquisition, real-time processing, storage, and wireless communication
  • Perform testing, calibration, debugging, and performance validation of the sensing devices
  • Document all development procedures and results
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • Practical experience with microcontrollers (e.g., ESP32, Arduino)
  • Familiarity with common communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI)
  • Hands-on knowledge of sensor interfacing (e.g., analog/digital sensors, cameras)
  • Comfortable with basic electronics tools, e.g., soldering iron, multimeter, oscilloscope, power supplies
  • Experience with prototyping techniques and tools
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving mindset, and reliable work ethic
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
