Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill four part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Craft Center Sewing Instructor and Techs for the Craft Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

The OSU Craft Center is a warm & welcoming place that supports and promotes creative endeavors in the arts by providing a dynamic environment, resources and programs in which people can foster their own creativity. The Craft Center provides a space for students to socialize, unwind, think creatively and learn in a noncompetitive environment. It also gives support to other departments by providing programs, space and equipment as needed.

The OSU Craft Center is seeking a knowledgeable and reliable Sewing Tech and Instructor to join our team at the Craft Center. This part-time position (6-10 hours per week) supports students in developing machine and hand sewing skills, maintains a welcoming and inclusive studio environment, and leads orientations each term. The ideal candidate is passionate about sewing, enjoys helping others learn, and can troubleshoot equipment with confidence (or is open to learning). This position is responsible for keeping the studio organized and clean, keeping the studio stocked and ready for student use, and organizing donation materials.

Position Duties
  • Manage Sewing Studio materials, tools, donations, cleanliness, and report equipment issues.
  • Participate in Fall Training, studio end of term meetings, and all staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with fellow Craft Center staff on projects and events.
  • Be knowledgeable of Craft Center policies and procedures as they relate to their expertise.
  • Conduct studio orientations and equipment-specific orientations for members each term.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of studio sewing machines, sergers, irons, cutting tools, and other equipment to members during Tech Times and help answer questions about members’ projects.
  • Develop and teach sewing workshops each term.
  • Provide guidance on sewing techniques, pattern use, fabric selection, and troubleshooting.
  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment for makers of all abilities.
  • Foster a positive work environment through demonstrated respect, openness, and clarity to fellow staff.
  • Communicate regularly with Craft Center Admin.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must be knowledgeable about general sewing techniques: how to use a sewing machine, serger, make buttonholes, sew in a zipper, and read/follow a pattern.
  • Must be able to work Craft Center special events scheduled annually and termly.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Passion for craft.
  • Good academic standing.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Prior leadership and teaching experience a plus
  • 2+ years remaining at OSU
  • Experience with Outlook and Teams
  • Federal Work Study Eligibility (not required).
