Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill multiple part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per
week) Security Operations Analyst positions for the Security Operations Center
(SOC) at Oregon State University (OSU).
The SOC provides Network Security Monitoring, Threat Intelligence, Forensics, and
Incident Management & Response for Oregon State University.

Position Duties
  • Monitor and respond to tickets in the help desk queue for the security office
  • Use tools to monitor and act on alerts of occurrences of suspicious activity
  • Write scripts, queries, and alerts to help improve efficiency with work flow
  • Participate in incident response when a security incident occurs
  • Communicate with different IT groups across campus
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Dependable, professional, and conscientious.
  • Experience using Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
  • Good problem-solving and decision making skills.
  • Initiative to explore questions, research answers and follow through with co-
  • workers to solve issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • At least 1 year of coding experience in any language.
  • Comprehension of how IP Networks operate (OSI Model).
  • Familiarity with Command Line Interfaces (CLI).
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Computer Science or related major
  • Cybersecurity course work
  • Knowledge of Python, Bash, Powershell, or other similar languages
  • System Administration experience with Linux and Windows servers
  • Experience using security tools (nmap, IDS/IPS, Firewalls, SIEM, Kali Linux, etc.)
