About the Job


The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our growing team in Pune, India. In this role, you will work within an agile, globally distributed organization to design, build, and scale our next-generation open-source platforms and backend infrastructure using Python.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a key contributor to implementing robust, high-performing features, ensuring code quality through automated testing pipelines, and actively collaborating with upstream open-source communities. You will work closely with Product Engineering, Product Management, and site reliability teams across time zones to solve complex, real-world technical challenges for enterprise deployments.

What will you do

  • Lead the technical design, implementation, and optimization of highly scalable and secure backend services primarily written in Python.

  • Drive high-quality delivery within an Agile/Scrum framework by actively engaging in all team ceremonies and peer code reviews.

  • Build, package, and deploy container-based applications targeting Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, and major public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

  • Architect and integrate automated testing frameworks, quality gates, and comprehensive observability (monitoring, logging, profiling) into CI/CD pipelines.

  • Act as a point of escalation for complex bug resolution, utilizing deep root-cause analysis across integrated distributed environments.

  • Engage with open-source community development models, occasionally contributing upstream fixes or participating in technology forums.

  • Proactively leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate development workflows, optimize code quality, and explore emerging automation patterns.

What will you bring

  • Experience: Typically requires 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong background in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Core Language: Strong expertise in Python software development, best practices, object-oriented design, and framework architectures (e.g., FastAPI, Django, or Flask depending on domain focus).

  • Linux & Containers: Hands-on experience with Linux distributions (RHEL, CentOS Stream, Fedora) and containerization workflows (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes).

  • CI/CD & DevOps: Demonstrated experience implementing and troubleshooting CI/CD infrastructure (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Tekton) and automation workflows.

  • System Design: Solid understanding of backend web infrastructure, REST/gRPC API patterns, database systems (SQL or NoSQL), and distributed systems architecture.

  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Ability to analyze and interpret complex systems and workflows, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills and a keen attention to detail.

  • Communication: Professional proficiency in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate complex technical concepts to global, cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Mindset: A proactive, growth-oriented mindset dedicated to fostering a collaborative, transparent, and inclusive open-source team environment.

Plus Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Prior code contributions to upstream open-source communities or projects.

  • Practical proficiency with general Ansible
