About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

We’re seeking a visionary Principal of Actuarial Data Science within our Consumer Insurance program to lead the design and delivery of Rivian’s consumer insurance capabilities. This senior leader will drive strategy and execution for risk selection, accident prevention, and autonomous vehicle insurance modeling—leveraging our vehicle data to build first-of-their-kind P&C products. The ideal candidate brings deep technical insurance expertise, strong data science acumen, and the leadership to scale data-driven product innovation in a rapidly evolving EV environment.
Why This Role Matters:
  • Redefine Insurance Risk: Build Rivian’s strategy for integrating safety, ADAS, and autonomous features into insurance product innovation.
  • Lead Autonomous Insurance Innovation: Be among the first in the industry to model and launch usage-based and autonomous-level (L3+) insurance solutions.
  • Actuarial Meets Data Science: Apply predictive analytics, accident causation modeling, and sensor data to drive safer, smarter, and more personalized coverage.
  • Build a Platform: Lead a cross-functional team at the intersection of product, engineering, data science, and regulatory functions.
  • Shape Industry Standards: Work with regulators and external insurance partners to define next-gen insurance frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the actuarial data science strategy for Rivian’s insurance products and platforms.
  • Design and deploy ML algorithms for real-time accident detection and automated causation (human, environmental, or vehicle-driven).
  • Measure and quantify the safety impact of Rivian’s ADAS and autonomous features across customer populations.
  • Build and file new P&C insurance products aligned with Rivian’s in-vehicle technology (L2 to L4), including usage-based pricing and embedded models.
  • Conduct profitability and underwriting analysis for Rivian’s growing book of business.
  • Act as a senior leader across data, insurance, legal, and cloud platform teams.
  • Optimize claims resolution and streamline FNOL through predictive analytics and sensor-based event validation.
  • Manage insurance product regulatory filings and rate filings across multiple states.
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing team of actuarial data scientists.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • ACAS or FCAS designation from the Casualty Actuarial Society.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in actuarial and/or insurance data science roles.
  • Deep experience with personal auto, usage-based insurance, and/or embedded insurance.
  • Proven leadership in scaling insurance programs or platforms.
  • Strong command of Python, R, SQL, and experience with cloud-based ML environments.
  • Demonstrated success working with vehicle or sensor data (GPS, accelerometer, etc.).
  • Strong executive communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience launching insurance products for ADAS or autonomous vehicles.
  • Expertise in regulatory strategy and multi-state insurance filings.
  • Passion for mobility innovation, EV systems, and safety-centric design.
