Role Summary
The Sr. Incoming Quality Engineer will play a key role in ensuring that all incoming parts and materials meet Rivian’s stringent quality standards before they reach production. This role will focus on inspection process development, supplier quality collaboration, problem-solving, and continuous improvement. The Sr. Engineer will act as the technical lead within the Incoming Quality team, driving defect prevention and ensuring robust controls are in place to protect the plant.This Position will be reporting to Plant Quality System Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain incoming inspection standards, work instructions, and acceptance criteria.
- Define sampling plans and risk-based inspection approaches based on part criticality and supplier history.
- Ensure accurate use of gauges, measurement systems, and inspection tools.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action activities for non-conforming materials.
- Partner with Supplier Quality Engineers (SQE) to drive supplier corrective actions (SCARs, 8Ds).
- Provide technical support for PPAP, APQP, and change management processes.
- Monitor and analyze NCM (Non-Conformance Management) data, FPY, and DPU metrics.
- Develop dashboards and reports to identify trends and high-risk suppliers.
- Provide visibility of defect data to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Identify opportunities to streamline incoming inspection and reduce redundant checks.
- Support Lean initiatives to eliminate waste in inspection processes.
Mentor technicians and inspectors in problem-solving and technical analysis. - Act as a technical liaison between Incoming Quality, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing, and Scrap Management.
- Ensure proper triage and disposition processes for incoming material.
- Provide training and coaching to quality team members on inspection techniques and quality tools.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related field).
- 5–8 years of experience in Quality Engineering within the automotive or manufacturing industry.
- Strong knowledge of PPAP, APQP, MSA, FMEA, GD&T, and ISO/TS standards.
- Experience with supplier quality, incoming inspection, and non-conformance management systems.
- Skilled in root cause analysis and corrective action (8D, Ishikawa, 5-Why).
- Proficiency in quality tools and data analysis (Excel, Minitab, Power BI/Tableau preferred).
- Strong communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Lean/continuous improvement experience is a strong plus.
Pay Disclosure
Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Illinois Based Applicants: $98,500 - $123,1000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
