Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

The Staff BSR Engineer is a key contributor to the vehicle refinement and acoustic quality attribute, primarily focused on eliminating Buzz, Squeak, and Rattle noises. This role requires working across the entire product lifecycle, from preventative design input in the development phase through rapid root-cause and countermeasure implementation during the production and launch phase. As part of the NVH team, the engineer will collaborate closely with Design, Manufacturing, and Validation teams to deliver a world-class, quiet, and refined cabin experience for Rivian products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead BSR Prevention in Design: Actively participate in design reviews to identify high-risk
  • interfaces, specify BSR-preventative materials, and ensure proper tolerances and
  • clearances are achieved to minimize noise generation.
  • Execute BSR Testing and Diagnosis: Plan and conduct component, subsystem, and fullvehicle BSR testing using dedicated BSR excitation profiles and road load data in both
  • laboratory and on-road environments.
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis: Utilize advanced BSR diagnostic tools, including
  • specialized microphones and accelerometers, to isolate the physical source and
  • mechanism of BSR events.
  • Support Production and Launch: Provide immediate on-site support for BSR issues
  • identified during manufacturing audits, end-of-line checks, and early customer feedback
  • (Warranty/Field issues). Develop robust and efficient fixes transferable to the assembly line.
  • Develop and Implement Solutions: Work with design and supplier engineers to drive
  • immediate and long-term design changes and material selections (e.g., anti-squeak tapes,
  • damping materials, component re-design) to permanently eliminate BSR.
  • Reporting and Standards: Transform BSR diagnostic data and countermeasure details
  • into clear, concise technical reports and actively contribute to the development and
  • standardization of internal BSR prevention guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant NVH experience, with significant focus on Buzz, Squeak, and Rattle
  • problem-solving in an automotive environment.
  • Proven experience working on BSR issues through both the vehicle design phase
  • (preventative) and the production/launch phase (troubleshooting/fix).
  • Strong command of BSR-related physics, including friction, stick-slip motion, material
  • damping characteristics, and component kinematics.
  • Proficiency in data acquisition and digital signal processing, particularly for transient noise
  • event capture and analysis (Matlab/Python is a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience using BSR-specific test and analysis equipment (e.g., BSR
  • simulators, micro-shakers, electronic stethoscopes).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional
  • teams to implement design changes.
  • Experience with a major data acquisition platform (e.g., Siemens Test Lab, Head Acoustics
  • Artemis, or similar) for BSR/NVH analysis is required.
  • Ability to travel (~25% of domestic travel) to test facilities and manufacturing plants.
