Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a part-time Temporary Research Assistant in the Human Microbiome Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM), located on the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) campus in Piscataway, New Jersey.

The Human Microbiome Laboratory seeks to understand the relationships and interactions between bacteria and their hosts, and the role of the human microbiome in health and disease. Under the direction of the Professor, the Temporary Research Assistant will contribute to a research project focused on the study of transgenerational microbiome alterations in relation to antibiotics and obesity. The Temporary Research Assistant will perform research activities relative to this project, as well as support other ongoing investigations within the lab.

This is a valuable opportunity for a student or recent graduate in a scientific discipline to deepen their research skills and contribute significantly to important research in the field of microbiome science.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Conducts studies of transgenerational microbiome alterations in relation to antibiotics and obesity.
  • Performs research activities, including animal model maintenance, biological sample collection, DNA and RNA extraction, and microbiome-related data analysis.
  • As assigned, performs various research/technical operations relative to the ongoing investigatory activities of the lab.
  • Conducts literature reviews and other research reviews as needed.
  • Accurately documents and maintains records of experimentation and results.
  • Attends and participates in regular lab meetings, as well as laboratory safety and project-specific trainings.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science or working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in a biomedical science related field.
  • Relevant or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Prior research experience is an asset.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Physical Demands: Sitting, standing, talking, listening and reading. Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for standard laboratory operations including pipetting and use of microscopes.
  • Work Environment: Laboratory environment. Universal precautions are mandatory.
