What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an R&D Computer Scientist to join the Z Machine Application Solutions team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise as a full-stack .NET web developer to design, develop, and deploy innovative web applications that support the operation of Sandia's Z Machine facility. You will also play a role in advancing our AI/ML initiatives by helping to design and implement the necessary architecture and infrastructure to enable effective data consumption by AI/ML tools. This position requires highly effective collaboration with a diverse set of multidisciplinary personnel within the organization, the Z Operations group (1670), and the 1600 Pulsed Power Sciences center. The ability to synthesize complex problems, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to emergent issues in a fast-paced environment is key to this position.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Design, develop, and deploy full-stack .NET web applications to support the diverse Z Machine community.
- Design and develop reports in Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI
- Maintain and implement improvements to existing software solutions and processes.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide insights and best practices for system design and data organization.
- Deploy and support hardware devices as needed to enhance Z Operations (e.g., tablets, kiosks, information displays).
- React quickly to troubleshoot and solve problems that impact the ability to operate the Z Machine.
- Work as a member of an agile development team.
The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary. This position requires working onsite at least 60% of the time.
Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E Computer Scientist candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.
Also for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience: - Master's degree in degree in computer science, Management of Information Systems, Information Assurance, or a relevant field
- Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following:
- Full-stack web development
- .NET (C#) development
- Relational databases
- Front end web frameworks such as Angular, React or Vue
- Experience with modern software development tools and practices
- Experience with multiple platforms and technologies, such as ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET Core, Blazor, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Visual Studio, or Visual Studio Code
- Experience with web frameworks and technologies such as Angular, jQuery, Bootstrap, or CSS preprocessors (e.g. SASS, SCSS, LESS)
- Experience utilizing and administering Microsoft SQL Server databases
- Experience with data visualization solutions such as Power BI, Tableau or SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
- Experience building and consuming API services
- Experience using version control systems (e.g., Git) to manage, track, and collaborate on code changes
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools (e.g. Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, containerization)
- Familiarity with data engineering practices, including data ingestion, transformation, and storage solutions (e.g., ETL processes, data lakes)
- Experience working on an agile team or in an agile or iterative environment

About Our Team
The Z Data Management & Insights department, org. 1678, provides Information Technology and Operational Technology infrastructure, products, and services for the Z Machine enterprise in the Pulsed Power Sciences center, center 1600. Additionally, the department is tasked with developing and implementing data management strategies for Z facility data, including facilitating the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) solutions using Z data. This work is accomplished through collaborations with operations, engineering, science, and program teams. Solutions address quality, efficiency, safety, and security that are well-aligned to achieving, and enabling, the scientific goals of the programs performing experiments at Z. The department's teams consist of an IT infrastructure operations team, an application solutions team, a Control, Monitor and Data Acquisition (CM/DAS) team, and a web content management team.
