About the Role
The Lead, Research Systems Development is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and supporting research computing infrastructure for the diverse technical needs of the School of Computing Science. The role enables high-impact computational research by supporting a wide array of research projects, labs, and disciplines in computer science. The role combines advanced research software development, systems administration, provisioning automation, and cloud/virtualization management to create a sustainable, scalable, and secure infrastructure and enables the adoption of cutting-edge computation technologies. The role serves as a subject matter expert and liaison for internal researchers, and infrastructure partners (e.g., SFU, RCG, CANARIE, Compute Canada, Amazon, Google, Lambda, NVIDIA, OPENAI). The role oversees operational planning, technology evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and business model development for long-term sustainability of research computing services.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Computing Science or related discipline with eight years of experience in a research computing or academic IT environment, including experience leading software deployment and systems teams or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Experience with scientific programming languages (C/C++, Fortran) and scripting languages (Python, Shell, Bash, Perl).
- Extensive experience with Linux systems administration (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu), virtual machines (VMWare, KVM), and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Proficiency in configuration management, automation, and deployment frameworks.
- Experience with queuing systems, batch schedulers, and HPC tools and architectures.
