Stanford University is seeking a Scientific Data Curator 4 to plan, develop, and implement the creation and advancement of web-based databases used to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of scientific data. A major project for this individual will be to work with the Lattice team which makes single cell genomic research data freely accessible to the entire scientific community where it will be integrated towards a reference map of the human body. This reference resource will make fundamental contributions to our understanding of human biology, disease, and treatments. The Lattice team is primarily responsible for collaborating with data generators to wrangle data into the Lattice database and subsequently into community resources, as well as interacting with the scientific community to ensure data meet reuse requirements.

The Senior Biocuration Scientist will join a team of Ph.D. biologists, computational biologists, and experienced database developers, and will collaborate with data generators and data integrators to ensure data are made accessible to the scientific community and are suitable for reuse. The successful candidate will be able grasp large, complex research and discussions, and place specific experiments into the context of the greater scientific community to identify and communicate key experimental variables. They will form collaborative relationships with researchers and will engage with the community, through published research and at scientific conferences, to understand the needs of data generators and data users. They will distill those needs into data resource requirements and features that will improve the accessibility and usability of data to researchers worldwide.


Duties include:

• Manage project teams; establish short-term priorities; determine long term goals for projects.
• Define novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals.
• Propose new hypotheses and design experiments to test the hypotheses; develop new data models.
• Compile and create educated summaries of the literature, discovering new facts by analyzing the collected data.
• Participate in collaborations with other labs.
• Work with users to answer questions about the contents of the database and provide assistance for submission of information.
• Participate in presentations and demonstrations of the database at conferences or other institutions.
• Create a variety of reports and user demonstration; collaborate with the users in the discovery of new knowledge.
• Collect and analyze information from peer-reviewed scientific journals and through direct submissions; abstract data into the required format and verify them for accuracy.
• Supervise or guide staff, as needed; schedule and assign workload; set appropriate deadlines; review work for quality and timeliness.
• Conduct performance management, including hiring and termination decisions, as needed.

The expected pay range for this position is $167,151 to $197,275 per annum.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Doctor of Medicine, Pharmacy, or Doctor of Philosophy in scientific field and five years of relevant experience, or combination of relevant experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
• Strong analytical skills.
• Demonstrated experience with relational databases, data integration, and statistics.
• Strong written and oral English communication skills.
• Computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet applications.
• Ability to understand scientific literature, experimental procedures and their limitations, and current needs of the research community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping. Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
