I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) is a large, complex academic unit with a highly active research enterprise. GWSPH known for conducting cutting-edge research, contributing to policy making, faculty and curricula grounded in real-world experience and proximity to national health science and policy leaders. The school has 7 academic departments, several centers focused on research and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Finance Department of GWSPH is charged with overseeing and facilitating transparent financial plans and operations that align with University and GWSPH goals and priorities. The team seeks a Senior Financial Analyst to contribute to the areas of financial operations, reporting, and analysis. This position reports to the Finance Director (FD) and collaborates with faculty and staff throughout the School.

This position performs a wide variety of analytical and administrative duties to support financial analysis, trending and forecasting operations within a school or division. Business responsibilities typically include assisting with preparation of multi-year budget projections and forecasts, detailed account analysis and tracking of trends, and recommendations for resource allocation.

Responsibilities include:

Budget Planning and Analysis
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on financial activity. This includes consultation with department heads and administrators regarding budget performance and planning, monthly reporting and account reconciliation, variance analysis, and quarterly projections. Identify areas of risk and recommend mitigation plans to the Managing Director.
  • Contribute to the School’s annual budget planning process by assisting department heads and administrators in preparing funding requests; assisting in projecting activity and resources needs for the 5- year plan; and assisting with submission of the budget in the University’s budget planning tool.
  • Prepare analyses in support of business decisions and to identify trends by selecting data sources and analyzing data using Excel and other tools. Assist with developing financial models and measuring key performance indicators to predict and evaluate program and department performance. Partner with School stakeholders to update processes around tracking and modeling. Target presentation of results to multiple stakeholder audiences as appropriate.
  • Prepare and maintain monthly and ad hoc budget templates used to guide budget meetings with the Finance Director. Assist with presenting findings and recommendations to inform internal decision-making and respond to central financial planning and analysis requirements.
  • Provide compensation analysis support by maintaining salary projection models, tracking labor cost trends, and evaluating proposed staffing plans in collaboration with internal offices. Assist in preparing position-related budget justifications and reviewing impacts of staffing changes on the school’s financial outlook.

Financial Administration
  • Process financial transactions for assigned departments and School-wide initiatives, including cost transfers, procurement, invoice payments, reimbursements, labor redistributions, and payroll. Monitor transaction status by creating and maintaining internal tracking tools. Research and resolve issues related to transaction processing, escalating as appropriate. Serve as approver for expense reports and invoices in assigned departments, ensuring compliance with applicable policies.
  • Serve as internal resource and liaison for procurement and payment issues. Maintain strong working relationships with Procurement, Accounts Payable, and other central and GWSPH departments.
  • Collaborate with program staff to reconcile online program revenue and other contractual deliverables. Monitor and track contractual payments to and from GWSPH’s online program partner. Collaborate with program staff to ensure compliance with payment terms. Review supporting documentation and prepare invoices.
  • Monitor and review time sheets and leave tracking and ensure that employee entry, manager approvals, and payments are completed timely and in compliance with GWSPH and University policies and procedures.
  • Monitor p-card compliance and expense reporting, providing training and assistance as needed.

Process, Documentation
  • Create and maintain GWSPH policy documentation to supplement guidance available from central administration. Prepare and deliver training as assigned to GWSPH staff on financial systems, procedures, and policies. Participate in onboarding new employees who have financial responsibility.

Perform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Proficiency with Excel, familiarity with Oracle Financials, Banner, and Kronos helpful.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to communicate financial information to a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent customer service attitude and skills.
  • Previous experience in higher education, academic medicine, and/or health care is desirable.
Hiring Range $72,235.20 - $99,250.68
