The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio seeks a full-time Vice Chair of Research to serve in a senior leadership faculty role. This position is responsible for advancing the Department’s research mission, fostering innovation, and strengthening its national profile in primary care research.
Eligibility
Full-time, [MD/DO, PhD, or terminal doctoral degree] faculty at the rank of Associate Professor or above.
Established record of impactful primary care research, including high-impact publications and sustained federal grant funding.
Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor and inspire a research workforce with varying backgrounds and levels of research experience.
Strong verbal and written communication skills to engage varied audiences.
Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with academic, clinical, and industry partners.
Areas of Responsibility
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement a research strategy aligned with Departmental goals, institutional priorities, and emerging trends in Family Medicine/Primary Care to address clinical and educational needs.
Strengthen the quality and visibility of research activities through recruitment and retention of research-focused faculty.
Research Development:
Promote collaborative research within and beyond the Department, across disciplines, and expand clinical trials by addressing barriers and improving research methodologies.
Oversee development and submission of grant proposals and promote funding from federal, private, and industry sources.
Mentorship and Training:
In collaboration with the Vice Chair of Professional Development and Scholarship, provide structured mentorship to research faculty, fellows, and trainees through individualized development plans, workshops, seminars, and feedback for scientific presentations.
Work collaboratively to ensure clear opportunities for career advancement for research faculty.
Collaboration:
Build partnerships with departments, institutions, and industry to advance interdisciplinary research, including strengthening ties with institutional research entities to develop clinical and translational collaborations that improve patient care.
Engage community organizations and stakeholders to support research initiatives and outreach.
Oversight and Evaluation:
Ensure research activities comply with ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
Meet regularly with research faculty and staff to identify needs and assist in securing resources, including equipment and supplies.
Support the Chair in annual reviews of research faculty and collaborate with the Research Manager to oversee research staff.
Dissemination of Research:
Promote publication in high-impact journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
Resource Management:
Oversee the Departmental Research Core, ensuring effective resource allocation, support for research initiatives, and advocacy to the Chair for necessary infrastructure.
Assignment
Reports to the Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
Compensation commensurate with terminal degree and experience.
Grant funding expected within the first three years of appointment.
Assignment may include clinical and/or teaching responsibilities in addition to research and leadership duties.
