We’re looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate, and driven iCAN Academic Advisor and Student Services Coordinator to be a champion of student experiences and success! The iCAN program is one of the few programs worldwide that provides non-computing college graduates with a bridge into tech. The Siebel School of Computing and Data Science in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Academic Advisor and Student Services Coordinator position. Under direction of the Director, this position supports the student advising, outreach, and experience efforts for the iCAN (Illinois Computing Accelerator for Non-Specialists) program in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science. The iCAN program offers a one-year graduate certificate in computing fundamentals for college graduates without a background in computing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Advising and Academic Services:
o Coordinate advising activities for applicants and potential applicants to the iCAN program concerning admissibility and application procedures.
o Receive, review, and process applications to the iCAN program, including review of credentials. Follow up with applicants on missing items and receipt of required documentation and respond to applicant inquiries for information. Respond to inquiries from prospective students via email and other communication methods such as periodic office hours. Communicate with the Graduate College to address applicant needs and process admissions.
o Communicate with admitted iCAN students to facilitate the admission process.
o Work with CS graduate academic advisors and other staff in advising iCAN students on curriculum, registration, and the fulfillment of degree requirements.
o Implement processes to ensure timely communication of announcements and information to iCAN students.
o Provide advising to iCAN students throughout their participation in the program. This includes regularly scheduled advising appointments to determine if milestones are being met to complete the program and advising on an as-needed basis for program enrollees.
o Advise students about specific academic program and graduation requirements of the iCAN program.
o In coordination with campus career center(s) and other pertinent departments as needed, oversee career development opportunities for iCAN students by seeking out career opportunities, making and maintaining connections with relevant employers, and helping students identify appropriate internships and experiential learning opportunities.
o Facilitate the transition of iCAN students to the MCS program in computer science. Maintain communication with iCAN graduates in the MCS program to ensure they are making acceptable progress.
o Utilize the University's Banner, Grad Recs, and Slate systems to enhance student advising.
o Inform and direct students to other appropriate university resources and services when applicable.
o Assist students with resolution of academic problems in collaboration with program leadership.
o In collaboration with program leadership and the Siebel School’s graduate advising team, monitor students' progress toward the academic degree and facilitate communication with probation/at-risk students to strategically plan for future success.
o Serve as a contact for the Graduate College regarding petitions, late add/drop, degree certification, etc.
o Assist with compiling of student data for the iCAN program when necessary.

Student Outreach, Events, and Experience
o Assist with the planning and facilitation of students focused events including, but not limited to, orientation, professional development, networking, and graduation.
o Lead projects designed to improve overall student engagement.
o Lead projects to stay connected with iCAN graduates.
o Build a mentoring and professional network that connects current iCAN students with iCAN graduates.
o Work with the CS Team in Chicago and Urbana with events, experiences, and professional opportunities that would be beneficial for iCAN students.
o Work outside of regular business hours as required to facilitate and attend special events, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Recruiting:
o Provide multiple touchpoints for potential iCAN students by holding in-person and virtual information sessions and office hours.
o Regularly engage with applicants that have started an application or have indicated an interest in the iCAN program.
o Work with the marketing and communication team to develop digital ads and other materials for recruiting.
o Occasional travel outside the Champaign-Urbana area for recruiting events.
o Work outside of regular business hours as required to facilitate and attend special events, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Assume additional appropriate related duties to further the Siebel School's mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree
Two years of experience in an advising environment, including advising students; understanding student development issues as they relate to advising and the student experience.
Experience working independently and as part of a team while meeting multiple deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education or related field.
Three or more years of relevant work experience.
Demonstrated experience with student engagement.
Demonstrated effective management of programs and staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Service-oriented attitude and enthusiasm for working with and advising students.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $62,000- $70,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus as needed per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy. Work authorization is not available for this position.
