Job Summary

Operate, maintain and train users on a new automated instrument for high-throughput (HT) formulation, processing and characterization of complex polymer systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, help with workflows and ensure high-throughput (HT) facilities’ smooth operation. Manage records of activities, experiments and programs.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of the HT facility, service contracts and data analysis tools. Inspect, maintain and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Provide the primary support for training new internal and external users on the HT system, supplies, data-driven methodologies, safety, security, and designing effective HT experiments.
  • Participate in regular meetings of the user group to refine and develop protocols and usage policies. This user group will be responsible for assessing security, protocols, user training, data management policies and the procedures for allocating time.
  • Develop, implement and update safety protocols and procedures, ensuring they continue to meet high standards. Provide support to campus safety audits of the HT facility.
  • Work with users to identify the feasibility and the supplies and materials needed to complete the proposed activities.
  • Track inventory, place orders, track deliveries and stock as well as manage supplies for the HT facility.
  • Assist in managing financial activities and reports for the HT facility. Monitor and evaluate the lab budget. Compile and provide research and progress reports.
  • Support undergraduate research laboratories to introduce HT methods for materials discovery as well as data-driven and ML techniques Support educational outreach activities, such as the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) camps and the Beckman Open House.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or equivalent bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry or physics. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
  • Research experience in collecting, analyzing, publishing and presenting polymer science research data and results.
  • Experience in maintaining equipment and training other users in equipment usage.
  • Significant, hands-on experience with performing rheology and differential scanning colorimetry experiments.
  • Basic background in computer programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or physics. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
  • Experience in performing and designing high-throughput experiments.
  • Experience in the usage of machine learning for materials optimization.

  • Ability to effectively interact with faculty, students and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly motivated, passionate and independent scientist who has strong records in designing and executing experimental projects.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements and laboratory equipment and related supplies.
  • Ability to analyze and develop protocols and procedures.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the posting period closes. The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $85,000/year. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements and budget constraints.

This position is eligible for sponsorship except for sponsorship of a new H-1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
