Job Summary

The Visiting Research Biostatistician provides advanced statistical and research design expertise to advance IIRER's research mission by transforming complex data into meaningful insights that inform policy, practice, and system-level improvements related to disability, chronic health, employment, career development, transition school to work, and vocational rehabilitation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Research Statistical Analysis and Design

• Lead statistical analysis for research and evaluation studies, including experimental and quasi-experimental designs, longitudinal analyses, and multi-site datasets.
• Provide consultation on study design, sampling, power analysis, and appropriate analytic methods.
• Conduct analyses using advanced techniques such as regression modeling, multilevel/hierarchical modeling, survival analysis, latent class analysis, and causal inference methods.
• Develop statistical analysis plans (SAPs) for grants, IRB submissions, and evaluation contracts.

Data Management & Collaboration

• Work closely with the Data Engineer/IT Project Manager to ensure analytic-ready datasets, secure data pipelines, and proper documentation.
• Guide data cleaning, variable construction, coding, and data integrity checks.
• Ensure fidelity to data governance frameworks including FERPA, HIPAA, IRB, and University of Illinois security requirements.
• Work with the Director of Field Operations and institute staff to confirm data quality from field collection and community-based research activities.
• Collaborate with the Director of Training to ensure training evaluations incorporate valid statistical methods.
• Partner with the Director of Communications to produce graphically compelling and accurate data visualizations.

Research & Evaluation Reporting

• Translate complex statistical findings into clear, accessible interpretations for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and funders.
• Contribute to manuscripts, technical reports, policy briefs, conference presentations, and grant proposals.
• Support the IIRER Directors (Executive, Assistant, Research, Evaluation, Operations, and Field) in building dashboards, performance metrics, and real-time analytic tools.

Administration

• Quality assurance and compliance- ensuring analytic processes adhere to the highest standard of scientific integrity.
• Participate in IRB submissions, data security protocols, and methodological reviews
• Develop and share statistical SOPs, templates and analytic guides.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Quantitative Psychology, Epidemiology, or a related quantitative discipline preferred.

• Minimum 3 years of applied statistical analysis experience in vocational rehabilitation, academic, public health, education, or disability research settings.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Quantitative Psychology, Epidemiology, or a related quantitative discipline preferred.

• Five years of experience in applied statistical analysis experience in vocational rehabilitation, academic, public health, education, workforce, or disability research settings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency in statistical software such as R, Stata, SAS, or Python (R preferred).

• Experience with data wrangling, reproducible research pipelines, and version control (e.g., Git).

• Familiarity with secure data environments and large database structures.

• Strong knowledge of research methods, quasi-experimental designs, mixed-methods integration, and causal inference.

• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

• Strong communication skills, especially the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.

• Commitment to equity-focused research and culturally responsive evaluation practices.

• Ability to work collaboratively across teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

• Understanding of Illinois State Department of Human Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Department of Education Systems.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the posting. The budgeted salary range for the position is $90,000 to $100,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
