The University of Maryland Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR) invites applications from outstanding candidates for a professional-track research professor, with a target start date of Summer 2026. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated scholar with a strong academic expertise in reliability engineering and high potential for both research and teaching that shapes the future of the field.

The University of Maryland Center for Risk and Reliability is an internationally-recognized leader in reliability education and research, consistently ranked among the top 5 Reliability Engineering degree programs worldwide. The Center offers a uniquely collaborative, interdisciplinary environment with strong connections to industry, national laboratories, and government agencies—providing exceptional opportunities for translational research and real-world impact.

CRR’s research portfolio spans the full spectrum of modern reliability engineering, including predictive reliability methods, computational risk analysis, human reliability analysis methods, probabilistic physics of failure, advanced probabilistic inference methods, system-level health monitoring and prognostics, artificial intelligence, and reliability engineering management. These methods are applied to some of the world’s most complex and safety-critical systems, including such as energy systems and nuclear power plants, hydrogen technologies, pipelines, infrastructure, manufacturing, space and aviation systems, petrochemical facilities, maritime, shipping, and transportation systems.

The Center is home to state-of-the-art research facilities and is expanding its capabilities with the development of a new Performance, Reliability, Integrity, and Materials Evaluation Laboratory (CRR PRIME), creating exciting opportunities for experimental, data-driven, and interdisciplinary research.

Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in both scholarly research and teaching and for establishing a leading research program within the center including securing extramural funding. This position is ideal for researchers seeking to build a long-term, high-impact career in reliability engineering research and graduate education within a globally visible program.

Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: reliability data collection and analysis; probabilistic or quantitative risk analysis and assessment (PRA / QRA); physics of failure; accelerated life and degradation testing; failure analysis; prognostics and health management; structural health monitoring; system integrity management.

Appointments will be made at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Research Professor rank, commensurate with qualifications. Candidates for the rank of Assistant Research Professor should have received or expect to receive their Ph.D. in Reliability Engineering or a related discipline prior to employment. Candidates for the rank of Associate or Full Research Professor should have a distinguished record of research and educational activities and external funding.

Required qualifications:
- Ph.D. in reliability engineering, systems engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field.
- High potential for significant scholarship and impact through both research and teaching, including through multi-disciplinary research collaboration.
