The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT) Laboratory is the industry leader for transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design. We receive hundreds of gigabytes of transportation data daily, making our petabytes of archived data likely the largest collection of traffic data in the world. Our clients use our software to monitor real-time operations and analyze historical data to generate valuable insights. Our work saves taxpayers money, improves the environment, and saves lives!

Our office is in College Park near the University of Maryland, easily accessible by DC Metro, MARC train, bus, car, and bike. Local employees are welcome to work in our office, or other locations, with a flexible schedule around our core hours. We also have many employees who are fully remote and work from different states. UMD requires all employees to live in the US, and we periodically bring remote employees to work with colleagues on-site.

When you join our team, you will work to define, document, and test a wide variety of transportation data analytics and operations applications. You will learn new skills and stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Frontend Role Overview
We’re looking for a frontend engineer who’s passionate about building fast, intuitive, and visually engaging web applications. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to craft user experiences that feel seamless and perform beautifully at scale.
What You’ll Do
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement modern web interfaces that drive core product experiences.
Build and maintain reusable, component-based UIs using React-style frameworks and TypeScript.
Contribute to code reviews, architecture discussions, and overall frontend best practices with an eye for performance and maintainability.
Take ownership of core UI systems and ensure they remain performant, accessible, and easy to extend.
Work across the stack when needed—integrating with backend services (e.g. Axios-based connectors) and helping design efficient APIs.
Partner with the design team to develop intuitive, legible UX and interaction patterns that enhance user experience.
Continuously refine the codebase to reduce technical debt and improve reliability.
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a relevant field.
2+ years professional experience with TypeScript and JavaScript, particularly in a React-style component architecture.
Strong understanding of HTML/CSS, including responsive design, layout systems, specificity, and accessibility.
Hands-on experience working with Axios or similar backend connectors, and an understanding of how frontends interact with APIs.
A collaborative mindset with a passion for shipping well-crafted, user-centered features.
Bonus Points
Experience with browser APIs and frontend performance profiling/optimization.
Familiarity with unit testing, API design, and maintaining large-scale UI systems.
A track record of leading technical initiatives or mentoring other engineers.
Contributions to internal frameworks or tooling that improved developer efficiency or product reliability.
Physical Demands: Sedentary work performed in an office environment. Regularly required to communicate and exchange information and to use technology/devices. Position can be 100% remote (US based only)
