Department Overview
Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays a role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with technology-related information, products, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management.
Division Overview
The Academic IT (AcadIT) division in Health Information & Technology Services (HITS) serves both the education and research communities at the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS). We engage faculty, students, and staff to provide a holistic portfolio of software and applications, infrastructure, device support, and custom projects to promote innovation and excellence. AcadIT is comprised of three areas that work in concert to provide support: 1) Application Services - focused on product management and support for vendor applications; 2) Software Delivery - focused on building custom applications when a vendor solution is not available and offering secure application environments; 3) Technical Services & Engagement - focused on providing support for high-performance computing, device management, data integration, and scientific programming and engagement and outreach with our customers.

The Academic Applications team within HITS is seeking an Intermediate Business Systems Analysts (BSA) to help drive innovation and efficiency in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) used by the Central Biorepository (CBR). This critical system supports cutting-edge biomedical research by managing high-quality, highly annotated biospecimens that fuel discoveries and improve healthcare outcomes.
As a BSA, you will play a key role in administering and configuring scientific applications, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of biomedical researchers and the broader University of Michigan research community.

Responsibilities*
- Work with customers to gather requirements for changes to business processes and information systems.
- Analyze business and user needs; document functional requirements; assist in identifying dependency and integration issues.
- Participate in system upgrades, quality assurance testing, environment validation, and other related system updates.
- Participate in weekly team meetings, act as Tier 1 triage for incoming tickets and requests, review and resolve tickets, and assist other team members.
- Maintain accurate employee training information for account provisioning, credentials management, and CAP compliance; validate training and provision end-user accounts in multiple environments.
- In collaboration with senior team members, determine training needs by working with our subject matter experts to gain the information needed to create comprehensive training programs.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience in a related discipline.
- 3+ years of professional experience.
Desired Qualifications*
- 3+ years of experience in a wide variety of business analysis responsibilities including gathering, translating, prioritizing, and documenting requirements, data and system analysis, design, and system testing.
- Demonstrates ability to conduct root-cause analysis for problems of varying levels of complexity. Can understand and clearly articulate business and technical concepts.
- Demonstrates ability to apply knowledge from new business domains with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Experience designing and scripting eLearning lessons, modules, and videos.
- Experience training trainers and end-users. Able to effectively deliver training material to groups of varying sizes and is willing to adapt to challenging training situations and personalities.
- Ability to build relationships, engage adult learners, and establish an enjoyable learning environment.
- Demonstrates willingness and a strong aptitude to learn new technologies, understand technical information, and communicate it to others using clear, concise, and user-friendly language.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a changing environment, including the ability to manage under deadline pressure, ambiguity, and changing priorities.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with those with differing opinions and levels of understanding. Uses effective strategies and materials to build consensus among differing opinions.
- Demonstrates skills in leading meetings, developing and delivering presentations, and using formal/informal networks to accomplish tasks and goals.
- Demonstrate respect for and seek the opinion of others; trusts and values each person's contributions to the team, develops smooth, cooperative working relationships.
- Experience with Articulate or other similar modular-based or video software solutions for creating training materials.
- Understands Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes.
- Experience writing SQL queries to gather data.
- Experience using ServiceNow, JIRA, or other ticketing systems.
