Job Summary

Overview:
This position with the Quality Analytics team at the University of Michigan Health plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality and delivery of healthcare services at Michigan Medicine. The role will design, develop, and maintain reports, dashboards, and data interfaces tailored for diverse audiences, helping to transform data into actionable insights.

Key responsibilities include data infrastructure development where the role will lead the creation and upkeep of robust data structures and extraction processes. This work supports comprehensive data handling for intricate reporting and thorough analysis. The analyst will also analyze and interpret clinical and administrative data from a variety of sources to uncover insights that enhance care quality across inpatient and outpatient settings. These analyses will focus on aspects such as disease management, physician practice patterns, and case management. Working closely with team leads and clients this role will craft report formats and visualizations that are clear, compelling, and actionable. The designs will help report recipients easily identify issues and opportunities for improvement in healthcare quality and operations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Oversee project planning and execution, including creating timelines, resource plans, and documentation. You'll define requirements, identify risks, and communicate status updates to stakeholders, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Team Engagement: Mentor and guide intermediate level staff, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable team environment. Advance departmental BI capabilities contributing to training and establishing best practices.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize languages like SQL, SAS or python, as well as BI tools like Tableau or Power BI to perform in-depth data analysis. Summarize findings and propose actionable recommendations to drive impactful decision-making.

Responsibilities*

Visualizations: (50%)

  • Design analytic products intended for audiences ranging from senior leaders and clinicians to the general public
  • Deliver analytic presentations (dashboards, reports, portal interfaces) of provider, product, program, and service specific data to internal staff, clinicians, UMHS leaders, relevant committees, and other constituencies.
  • Develop and maintain supporting documentation of measurement methods and algorithms, data sources and reporting processes.
  • Conceptualize and develop cross-functional client/unit strategic objectives, business processes, and initiatives that drive or increase organizational value.
  • Work with the clinical information analysts, data managers and business systems analysts to plan and implement the data management and analysis of products and programs, including definition of data requirements, data capture and storage, analyses required to measure and evaluate performance, and reporting needs.
  • Guide the business process improvement discussions leading to advice on potential problem resolutions including gathering the support and resources for BI initiatives.
  • Manage cross functional unit projects and/or teams which include project planning, task management, status reporting, etc.
  • Communicate with stakeholders related to the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data and analytics.

Data Support: (20%)

  • Extract data for reporting from departmental and EMR sources. Administer the design and development of data structures and data extracts to support comprehensive data collection, loading, and extraction needed for products.
  • Validate data quality and reasonableness in reports and/or analyses of health services prior to distribution.
  • Work with other analysts and DM team members to identify and automate tools that deliver routine datasets and related analytic information.
  • Maintain communication with technical groups inside and outside department.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and facilitate improvement efforts ensuring high quality data deployments.
  • Follow all appropriate privacy and security guidelines

Analytics: (20%)

  • Apply knowledge of data analytics, population health, disease processes, measurement and analysis to the completion of complex assignments.
  • Produce analytic results by applying business logic and statistics to data which are extracted and integrated across multiple sources.
  • Evaluate performance, utilization, quality of care and patient safety measures against benchmarks
  • Collaborate with physicians, administrators, senior analysts and others to produce metrics to the specific needs of the project

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative field like Business, Computer Science, Informatics, Engineering, biostatistics, public health, Economics.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in data analysis and visualizations.
  • Proficiency in the use of data analytic and BI reporting tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, SQL, SAS, Excel.
  • Experience or the ability to gain proficiency in using MiChart and querying EPIC?s Clarity and Caboodle databases.
  • Understanding of data base structures and data architecture relevant to the development of dynamic reporting.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple competing tasks and priorities.
  • Experience with Data Warehouses and enterprise level BI systems.
  • Strong customer service skills and commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good verbal, written and visual presentation skills.
  • Ability to anticipate requests and needs in advance and plan accordingly.
  • Skills to work effectively across various healthcare groups

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's Degree (Quantitative Field) with an advanced degree (biostatistics, public health, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Informatics) preferred.
  • 7 or more years of progressively responsible experience in health care analysis and data visualizations.
  • Proficiency in the use of data analytic and BI reporting tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, SQL, SAS, Excel and Crystal Reports.
  • Experience in querying EPIC?s Clarity and Caboodle databases and related data delivery tools.
  • Ability to incorporate R, Python or other programming languages to enhance reporting through statistical analysis.
  • Experience with Enterprise Data Warehouses and BI systems.
