Job Summary

The Allgeier laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is seeking a Research Lab Technician. The lab focuses on ecosystem ecology, food web ecology, coastal and coral reef ecology, global change ecology, fisheries, and sustainability.

There is potential for independent research within this position and a high level of independence is encouraged.

Responsibilities*

The selected candidate will assist in research projects involving ecological and environmental science, including: laboratory analyses (e.g., processing samples for isotope or chemical analyses, biogeochemical analyses), computer data entry, and potential field-based research in the Caribbean. Basic laboratory management will also be part of the duties.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from a College or University with a bachelor's degree in a natural science discipline such as Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, or Environmental Sciences with 1 to 2 years of experience.
  • Experience in detailed, high-quality laboratory analyses of samples (preferably associated with biogeochemistry and/or nutrient analyses for N and P in aqueous and tissue samples - this later part is not required).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (oral & written) skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ability to organize data for publications and proposals.
  • Experience in operating and coordinating research collection and analysis with minimum supervision.
  • Experience in field collection of environmental samples under difficult conditions.
  • SCUBA training and relevant marine field sampling skills.
  • Possession of a Master's degree in a related natural science field.

This is a one year term limited position with the possibility of renewal for multiple additional years.
