Job Summary

The Manager, Research Billing Compliance, reports to the Director of Revenue Cycle Compliance and leads the Research Billing Compliance team. This position provides strategic oversight, operational leadership, and subject matter expertise in billing compliance for clinical research. The manager works closely with the Clinical Research Office and other stakeholders to ensure accurate billing practices, resolve complex issues, and implement process improvements in line with CMS, NIH, and institutional standards. This role is critical to ensuring the compliant interface between research and healthcare billing systems.

Responsibilities*

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Research Billing Compliance and the Clinical Research Office.
  • Supervise and develop a team of Research Compliance Specialists, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, and professional development.
  • Ensure billing activities align with CMS, NIH, FDA, and institutional research billing policies.
  • Audit research-related charges to ensure appropriate routing to insurance or research accounts; review and resolve complex billing cases.
  • Develop and maintain reporting dashboards using MiChart and Tableau to track billing compliance metrics.
  • Participate in enterprise-level committees, workgroups, and improvement projects that enhance clinical research billing practices.
  • Recommend and implement operational improvements that enhance accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across the research billing workflow.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, health information, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in healthcare billing or compliance, with at least 1 year of supervisory or team lead experience.
  • Experience with Epic (MiChart) workflows, charge entry, and reporting tools.
  • Experience with Tableau Reporting tools
  • Familiarity with CMS billing guidelines, research protocols, and clinical trials compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience in operational improvement or project leadership.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
