Required Qualifications*

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field that involves quantitative analysis (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in compensation analysis or administration.
    • 5+ years of experience is required for consideration at the Senior Level.
  • Compensation Expertise: Hands-on experience conducting job evaluations and market pricing, using both quantitative and qualitative methods (including analysis of salary survey data) to determine appropriate compensation levels.
  • Contemporary Practices: In-depth knowledge of modern compensation practices and concepts, including broad-based pay structure design, supplemental compensation programs, and pay-for-performance systems.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with compensation-related laws and regulations (e.g., Fair Labor Standards Act) and the ability to apply them to ensure compliant and equitable pay practices.
  • Analytical Skills: Exceptional analytical and critical-thinking abilities, with keen attention to detail. Capable of interpreting complex data, identifying trends, and developing insightful recommendations to solve problems.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex data clearly and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Professionalism: High level of integrity, sound judgment, and discretion in handling sensitive information; demonstrates alignment with Michigan Medicine's core values of caring, innovation, inclusion, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in compensation analysis tools and technology, particularly Microsoft Excel (competence with advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data modeling) for data analysis and reporting. Ability to quickly learn and effectively use HRIS or compensation management systems.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Certification: Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or similar WorldatWork compensation certification (achieved or in progress).
  • Industry Experience: Compensation experience in a large, complex organization; experience with compensation practices in a healthcare system or academic medical center is a plus.
  • Technology: Experience working with specialized compensation software or advanced HRIS modules for compensation planning and analysis.
  • Advanced Analytics: Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel (capable of building complex models, utilizing advanced formulas and macros) and experience creating dynamic analytical tools or dashboards.
  • Education: A master's degree or advanced coursework in a relevant field (e.g., Human Resources, Business, Finance) is a plus.

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
