Job Summary

Highly motivated individual sought for a Research Lab Technician Intermediate position in a basic/translational research laboratory in the Department of Surgery. The candidate will work closely with Post doctorate, graduate students and senior researchers, with focused project in basic/translational pancreatic, sarcoma and melanoma cancer research utilizing mouse models. Prior experience in biomedical research is essential.

Responsibilities*

The candidate will work both independently and as part of a team participating in basic science/applied bench research using a combination of cellular and molecular biological approaches including mouse model research. The candidate will be responsible for lab management including maintaining safety manuals, lab staff certificates, ordering, lab inventories (human and mouse specimens).

  • Appropriate animal research techniques such as gender determination, proper handling and restraint of mice for routine procedures (e.g., physical examination, administration of medication), observation of mice for recognition of normal and abnormal physical and behavioral changes, anesthesia, euthanasia, and blood extraction.
  • Mouse colony management, maintain breeding colony of multiple mouse strains, including record keeping and genotyping.
  • Breeding and injecting animals according to protocols and health check on colonies.
  • Maintain and operate a variety of laboratory instruments which include automated cell counters, autoclaves, centrifuges, fluorescent microscope, PCR machine, PCR hood, biosafety cabinets.
  • Perform accurate record keeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as this candidate will be expected to work productively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • Must be willing to get appropriate vaccinations for lab work.

Required Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma or Associate's Degree
  • Basic laboratory techniques to execute the duties described and 1-2 years of laboratory research experience.
  • Basic computing skills including knowledge of Excel and Word programs for database management and record keeping are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Applicants must be hardworking, highly motivated, well organized, and able to work with minimal supervision. Applicants must have the ability to work efficiently, follow instructions meticulously, and maintain a reliable work schedule. Applicants will also have to be flexible with work schedule and meeting times with the supervisor.
