Job Summary

The Speech Neurophysiology Lab is seeking candidates for a part-time Research Project Engineer position in a brain imaging laboratory that studies the neural bases of stuttering and other related speech-language and developmental disorders.

Responsibilities*

  • Troubleshoot and maintain experimentation setups, auditory stimulus delivery hardware (e.g., microphones, headphones, couplers, amplifiers, sound level meters), and EEG data collection systems.
  • Support researchers in implementing and optimizing behavioral and psychoacoustic experiments using platforms such as MATLAB, Python, PsychoPy, Eprime, and Presentation.
  • Perform signal acquisition and processing for audio and behavioral data (filtering, artifact detection, etc.).
  • Assist in stimulus calibration, equipment interfacing, and experiment synchronization.
  • Support in MRI/fMRI data preprocessing pipelines (e.g., FSL, SPM, AFNI, or BIDS-compliant workflows).
  • Maintain documentation of system configurations, troubleshooting logs, and technical protocols.
  • Train research assistants, students, and other research staff in experimental setups, research methods, and analyses.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or a related field and 3 years of related experience.
  • Familiarity with signal processing techniques and programming in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research setting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Hands-on experience with psychoacoustic behavioral experimentation equipment and environments.
  • Exposure to fMRI or MRI image analysis tools (e.g., FSL, SPM, ANTs, AFNI, or similar).
  • Experience with neuroimaging data organization standards (e.g., BIDS).
  • Interest in cognitive neuroscience, speech perception, or sensorimotor integration.
  • Knowledge of real-time stimulus feedback systems.

  • This position is Part Time - 20 hours a week, 0.5 FTE

Background Screening
