Job Summary

The University of Michigan's Information and Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Web Hosting Manager to lead the Web Hosting team to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable web solutions that power the university's academic, research, and administrative needs. We are looking for a technical leader with a background in modern web architecture or related fields. The individual selected will also be responsible for setting strategic direction and service management for the team's portfolio of services. A sample of our current architecture utilizes Cloudflare for security and performance, Pantheon for WordPress and Drupal sites, and AWS services for cloud solutions. This integrated approach enables ITS to deliver reliable and efficient web solutions that support the diverse needs of the university community
As a technical leader, you will not only mentor and guide the Web Hosting team but also work with managers across System Operations to drive innovation and strengthen services for the whole department. This position reports to the Director of System Operations and is open to hybrid or in-person work arrangements in Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities*

  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and support a high-performing team of web hosting professionals. Foster an inclusive and collaborative team culture, managing recruitment, performance evaluations, and the professional growth of staff.
  • Strategy & Service Road mapping: Define and execute the strategic vision and technology roadmap for the university's web hosting services. Lead modernization efforts, evaluating and implementing new technologies to meet evolving campus needs.
  • Service & Lifecycle Management: Work with the team on the full lifecycle of multiple, complex web hosting services, from initial design and implementation to operations, enhancement, and eventual retirement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Campus Support: Act as the service owner, you will work with the campus community to understand their requirements, communicate service changes, and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Technical Leadership & Collaboration: Provide deep technical leadership on web architecture and hosting technologies within the team and across ITS. Collaborate closely with peers in System Operations and other departments to align on technical standards and drive departmental innovation.
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee the daily operations of the web hosting environment, ensuring service reliability, security, compliance, and performance meet or exceed service-level objectives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Technical Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in web hosting, application administration, systems engineering, application development or a related field.
  • Management Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in a formal management or team leadership role
  • Stakeholder & Service Management: Demonstrated experience managing the delivery of a technical service to a diverse set of internal or external stakeholders, including customer relationship management and communications.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Modern Web Architecture: Strong understanding of the modern web stack, including multi-tier application architecture, CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Drupal), and database integration (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Cloud & Containerization: Hands-on experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience managing developers and development: Experience managing developers,
  • Software Development & Release Management: Experience managing developers or a development process, including gathering stakeholder requirements and overseeing the development lifecycle.
  • Monitoring & Analytics: Familiarity with logging and metrics-gathering tools (e.g., Zabbix, Splunk).
  • Security & Compliance: Experience with web application security principles, vulnerability management, and compliance standards (e.g., Cloudflare, SSL/TLS certificate management, Web Application Firewalls, patching).
