Job Summary

The Department of Pathology, Division of Pathology Informatics is seeking a team member to fill a Business Systems Analyst Intermediate position. Under general supervision, works with team to formulate and define systems scope and objectives based on both user needs and a good understanding of applicable business systems and industry requirements. Assists with analysis of department and end-user business needs, documentation of requirements, and translation of requirements into proper system specifications utilizing their clinical background and knowledge of health care compliance regulations. Must be able to devise or modify procedures and processes to solve complex problems related to the laboratory workflow, considering clinical application functions and limitations, operating time, and desired results.

  • Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in test/database build activities across different clinical laboratory functional areas
  • Perform regression testing from testing plan/scripts and use cases for new software versions and patches
  • Assist with coordinating software version upgrades and corrections as needed
  • Assist with implementation of software, hardware or systems as needed
  • Protect the integrity of the data and escalate issues appropriately
  • Provide technical assistance and support to areas involved with database and hospital information system (HIS) management, the LIS, electronic medical record (EMR), and ancillary clinical applications.
  • Analyze, compare, and evaluate solutions independently based on the laboratory's needs
  • Develop standard operating procedures for using the LIS and auxiliary software
  • Communicate procedural changes to affected users and analysts
  • Investigates and documents third-party requirements, clinical requirements, and other requirements
  • Implement workflows/workflow changes within the laboratories and LIS
  • Document and track new issues within the LIS and EMR using ticketing systems
  • Keep team leads, managers, and directors informed of issues as they arise
  • Adhere to all accreditation requirements regarding the LIS and EHR
  • Daily troubleshooting and follow up regarding EHR and other HIS issues
  • Assist with creating test plans and use case scripts for current and future workflows
  • Assist with defining system scope and objectives of projects and meeting project goals
  • Manage and resolve error queues for LIS, HIS, and ancillary pathology applications

  • Document workflows for use in regression testing and workflow analysis

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.   • Excellent troubleshooting and communication skills

  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, allied health, computer science/information technology, or other related field and/or 4 or more years of relevant experience.

  • 3 or more years of experience working in a large complex healthcare environment

  • 2 or more years of experience working in a clinical laboratory

  • 2 or more years of experience directly supporting LIS applications

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Understanding of the clinical laboratories and their workflows within a large hospital system, with particular interest in outreach services and reference laboratory support
  • Understanding of large healthcare organizations and data structures
  • Current Epic certification
  • Experience with interfaces at a healthcare facility, including working knowledge of the HL7 messaging protocol
  • Experience working with SQL and reports
  • Self-motivated, curious, able to troubleshoot issues and find novel solutions to customer problems
  • Ability to work with multiple teams; must be able to communicate well with others
  • Ability to work independently, reaching out to business partners and customers when necessary

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is exempt and may require more than 40 hours a week to complete work, this includes rotating on call with other staff, participating in off hospital business hours to support version upgrades or software implementations and potential off hospital hours in an emergent event.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
