| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 20 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States. |
| Position Summary | This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The UNC Chapel Hill Community Health and Wellness Resource (CHWR) team is offering a Research Internship for undergraduate students interested in public health. The CHWR team conducts innovative research designed to support caregivers and those in their care through innovative strategies that promote health and wellness across the lifespan. While it’s not all we do, we are interested in health behavior interventions, measurement in research, and dissemination and implementation. The purpose of the internship is to provide research knowledge, hands-on experience, and professional development for an undergraduate student who may be interested in a career in public health. The CHWR team had many projects under its research umbrella (https://chwr.unc.edu/). For this internship an undergraduate student will learn about all of the projects and choose one to work with while learning about different aspects of research over the course of 10 weeks. Research Interns with the CHWRG can expect the following: * High-quality, short-term work experience - ~10-week summer internship appointment - 20-30-hour work week - Hybrid work model including remote, and in-person work at the CHWR office - Bi-weekly paychecks during appointment * Learning about the research process - One-on-one mentoring from senior staff at various stages of the research process - Attend workshops to learn more about different aspects of research - Invitation to attend workshops from researchers outside of CHWR - Read and discuss academic journal articles with the team * Experience public health research - Work closely with a research project team you choose - Interview different team members about their research path and experiences - Work on research tasks from your chosen project - Learn about possible careers in public health research |
