The Pitt Biospecimen Core (PBC) is an institutional resource for collection, processing, and disbursement of biospecimens dedicated to serving the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Faculty in meeting their research needs. PBC Labs are located at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Magee-Womens, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Children’s Hospitals.

Responsibilities include reviewing the Operating Room schedule to identify cases eligible for researcher projects. Working closely with the Department of Pathology, the incumbent will collect, process, disburse, and store human biological materials based on established protocols. Processing may include but is not limited to aliquoting blood products, gross dissection of tissue, and PBMC isolation. Routine data entry into specimen inventory system for the collection, receipt, disbursement, and storage of each sample. Rotation at other PBC labs is required. Pulls samples to fill requests based on PBC customer projects. Ordering lab supplies. Utilizes personal protective equipment and ensures adherence to all applicable protocols and guidelines.

Job Summary

Coordinates to obtain human tissue specimens and processes and banks human tissue from surgical and autopsy patients. Prepares samples and records for disbursement. Acts as point of contact for tissue bank technicians and provides guidance. Performs inventory maintenance and data entry functions. Utilizes personal protective equipment and ensures adherence to all applicable protocols and guidelines.

Physical Effort

Walking to and from locations within hospital.· Sitting and standing for long periods of time at the bench.· Reading small print on tubes, cryovials, and labels. · Lifting up to 30 pounds. Bending and lifting to put away supplies.
