Over the past several years, the department’s portfolio of projects utilizing advanced sequencing methodologies—such as single-cell RNA sequencing, library preparation, and data quality control—has grown substantially. The increasing complexity and volume of sequencing work now exceed the capacity of our existing personnel and resources. Establishing this new position will strengthen the department’s technical infrastructure and ensure the continued success of several high-priority research initiatives. The NGS Technician will provide critical expertise in the preparation, execution, and analysis of sequencing workflows, directly supporting multiple investigators and collaborative projects. This role will also help standardize best practices across laboratories, enhance data reproducibility, and accelerate translational research efforts.
Job Summary
Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.
Perform routine molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, quantification, and quality assessment.
Prepare sequencing libraries according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs) for various platforms (e.g., Illumina, Oxford Nanopore).
Operate, monitor, and maintain next-generation sequencing instruments and related laboratory equipment.
Assist in sample tracking, documentation, and data entry using electronic lab notebooks and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Conduct reagent preparation, labeling, and inventory management to ensure readiness of sequencing workflows.
Perform quality control checks on sequencing runs and assist in troubleshooting technical issues under supervision.
Adhere strictly to laboratory safety, biosafety, and data integrity standards.
Assist with receipt, logging, and proper storage of biological samples, ensuring chain-of-custody and sample integrity.
Collaborate with senior technicians and research staff to meet project timelines and maintain workflow efficiency.
Maintain clean and organized workspaces, participate in regular equipment calibration and maintenance schedules.
Support preparation of reports, protocol updates, and training documentation as needed.
Approximately 40–50% of the time performing hands-on laboratory work (pipetting, benchwork, loading instruments, handling samples).
30–40% of the time spent at a computer (data entry, documentation, analysis, instrument monitoring).
10–20% of the time standing, walking between work areas, or handling light materials (e.g., reagent bottles, lab supplies under 25 lbs).
Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods and perform repetitive fine-motor tasks such as pipetting.
