Laboratory Research Technician III RBL5
Med-Microbiology and Molecular Genetics - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (25006820)

The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is seeking a Staff Lab Technician to join the laboratory of Dr. JoAnne Flynn. The Flynn Lab focuses on tuberculosis, with research centered on host–pathogen interactions, the immunology of tuberculosis, vaccine and drug development, and studies of HIV/M. tuberculosis co-infections. Research in the lab utilizes non-human primate models of tuberculosis. The Staff Lab Technician will perform a variety of laboratory analyses, including isolation of immune cells from blood and tissues, immunologic assays such as FACS, ELISPOT, and ELISA, plating bacterial cultures, and conducting PCR tests. The position requires the use of laboratory equipment including microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, ELISPOT readers, and real-time PCR machines. At least one year of experience in an immunology, microbiology, or related laboratory setting is required, and candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, with preference given to those in biology, immunology, molecular biology, or chemistry. The position requires skills in immunologic and molecular biologic assays, sterile technique, and the ability to master new laboratory procedures, including operating specialized equipment and achieving Biosafety Level 3 proficiency. Work will often be conducted as part of a team, with close coordination among lab members, and experienced laboratory technicians will provide training and direct supervision. Data generated in this role will be entered into an electronic laboratory notebook and shared with the Principal Investigator and collaborators, and while the information is not confidential, it is highly sensitive and must be handled responsibly. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to important research on tuberculosis using advanced non-human primate models within a collaborative and scientifically rigorous environment. A pre-employment TB test is utilized to pre-emptively prevent the spread of tuberculosis to medical and healthcare professionals as well as patients.
