A Research Scientist position is available in the lab of Dr. Or Shemesh in the Ophthalmology Department at the University of Pittsburgh. One of the research projects will focus on developing genetically encoded nanotechnological techniques with applications in cancer therapy and super-resolution imaging. The other project is aimed at designing non-viral gene delivery methods targeting cells in the brain and retina.

Job Summary

Conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates project development in collaboration with other specialists.

Essential Functions

Designing and performing required experiments, gathering and analyzing the data obtained and publishing the results in peer-reviewed journals.

Collaborating with other labs at Pitt and UPMC for the projects.

Performing administrative duties for running the lab. Training undergraduate and graduate students on scientific techniques.

Presenting findings at conferences.

Qualification: PhD in Bio/ Biomedical Engineering or related discipline with more than 6 years of postdoctoral experience in cancer therapy and non-viral gene delivery and editing techniques.

Required skills: Hands on experience with organic/ inorganic nano-material synthesis/ characterization (EDX, Spectrophotometry), microscopy (TEM, SEM, Confocal), gene delivery/ editing (LNP transfection, CRISPR), molecular biology techniques (cloning, electrophoresis, in-vitro transcription, PCR etc.) and synthesis/ purification of DNA/ RNA.
