A Laboratory Research Technician I position is available in the Telias lab of the University of Pittsburgh, Ophthalmology Department. The research will focus on molecular and physiological mechanisms behind progressive blindness.
Job Summary
Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.
Duties include:
- Mouse husbandry, breeding, cross-breeding, genotyping, monitoring, euthanasia and sample collection, sample processing (RNA, DNA, histological samples). Maintains and updates mouse databases for colonies and for samples.
- Assist the Lab Manager with administration such as placing orders, keeping inventories, performing routine maintenance, coordination with Animal Facility, EH&S and other University bodies and offices.
- Will learn from Lab Manager and PI basic methods in microscopy, molecular biology and biochemistry; and will carry out basic experiments as needed.
- Assists students and postdocs with cell culture work (preparing media, passaging cells, freezing cells).
- Will participate in all lab meetings and planning, will meet frequently with the PI and the Lab Manager at their discretion. Will have to prepare reports and databases using Microsoft Office tools or similar software.
The work will include a combination of standing and sitting, moving across labs and spaces, accessing the Animal Facility, etc. Most of the work will happen in the animal facility or at the lab wet bench, and some will be computer work.
