Responsibilities:
The NSF-OPAL team at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics seeks a Senior Optical Engineer to support the design of NSF OPAL, a new state-of-the art laser user facility with two new 25-PW lasers coupled to OMEGA EP to achieve and study extreme physical conditions. The candidate will be help evolve this project from conceptual design to final design. This position is in the Compression and Transport sub-system, involving the conditioning, transport, focusing, and diagnosis of meter-scale beams.Creates systems that manipulate and control light. Works on a wide range of applications, from designing lenses for cameras to developing cutting-edge optical technologies for various industries, including telecommunications, healthcare, and aerospace. Ensures optical systems meet specific performance and quality standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Optical modeling and design of broadband laser systems
Analysis and design of laser diagnostics (wavefront, spectrum, precision alignment, etc.)
Project management coordinating a diverse support team of laser, mechanical, controls, and software engineers
Develop project requirements, schedules, and budgets
Communicate results through formal design reviews
Develop innovative solutions to difficult design challenges
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor┐s Degree in Optics or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field and 3 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
Proficiency in optical modeling software (Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V)
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software operation
Excellent verbal and written communication
Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Experience with optical fabrication and metrology processes, particularly large optics
Experience with opto-mechanical, electrical, controls, vacuum systems
Other software experience: Matlab, C++, SQL, Python
Experience with FRED optical engineering software
