The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE:
This individual will learn to care for lab animals, make solutions, and learn basic experimental methods like gene expression analysis, and genomic annotation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Feeding marine organisms and cleaning aquaria. Will be trained in these skills. 25%
  • Making solutions for general lab use; this involves weighing dry reagents, calculating percentages and molarities of solutions, and operating the autoclave. Cleaning common equipment and glassware; this involves dishwashing glassware and other lab equipment. Will be trained in these skills. 25%
  • Performing basic molecular biology techniques to analyze gene expression. In situ hybridization, where specific mRNA molecules are localized in cells, involves probe synthesis by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to make probe templates, reverse transcription to make probes, collection, fixing and preparation of embryos, and hybridization and detection. Will be trained in these skills. 25%
  • Evaluating the results of automated genome annotation; this will be largely based use of a web-based BLAST analysis to confirm gene identities from an automated assembly, and documentation of these findings in a web-based genome browser tool. Will be trained in these skills. 25%

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • At least two years of college
  • Undergraduate classes in biology
  • Basic biology knowledge
